Off Topic Friday 04/05/13

That's right. This is the place where you can discuss almost anything you want, as long as it is within SWB Guidelines.

Want to discuss the Jodi Arias trial? This is the place...

Want to share something you read? Or a video you watched?

Yep, this is the place...

It is now day 9,454 in the Arias Death Penalty trial...well okay, maybe not day 9,454 but it sure feels like it!

Within the last 7 days, we've had a new expert witness, a motion for mistrial and the demise of a juror. Oh yes, and Jodi Arias and the new expert witness have both called in 'sick'.

Here's some links if you're interested in getting caught up...

Arias Trial Stories

What about those krazee Browns...

Meri getting all philosophical about forgiveness...

For not being fan friendly, perhaps?

And I hope the eyes in those devilled eggs aren't whole cloves!!

Janelle seems to be loving life. Dyeing eggs naturally for Easter...

A gift from Robyn...

And just enjoying life in the cuddlesac...

Hey, did she just say she's prepping for a 5K??? Go Janelle!

And this just in...

Huffingtonpost.com is reporting that...hold on to your post Easter chapeaus...that only three ladies from last season's RHoNY are returning - and they are not a Countess, a Morgan nor a lady with a prosthetic leg. Read the entire article here:

'Real Housewives Of New York' Cast: Carole Radziwill, Ramona Singer, Heather Thomson Returning

If this is true, looks like a Princess pulled royal rank over a pretentious Countess! I'm shocked I tell you, SHOCKED!

So what would YOU like to discuss?

  1. I think that the several times we saw Robyn and Kody having a secret between them like the dress and the baby..maybe Meri discovered something between robyn and Kody and felt left out

  2. I think this might make for an interesting Real Housewives of New York! I use the word might, because I didn't really like this last season. I would watch a little and then change the channel. Guess we'll see....

    1. I for one, really like Carol, Aviva drove me insane and i (kind of) like the countess, mainly because she is an original cast member and because she clashes with ramona who I also can't stand. I am a sucker for the Real Housewives franchises though, I've been watching ever since the very first OC season...kind of embarassing, I probably shouldn't admit it, I know my husband is ashamed haha

Maybe Meri is seeing some fellowship happening between the other sisterwives and noticing no one coming to her house? feeling a little left out? or the fact that robyn has probably stopped kissing her butt.

I saw the tweet about the deviled eggs, I think those ARE whole cloves, blegh, and GASP are they being displayed on the wet bar?!

Real Housewives is my guilty obsession - kind of embarrassed to admit too! I didn't start watching till OC's third season. I'm sure my husband is ashamed too - he doesn't watch it with me. He does watch Sister Wives with me:)

Good point about how Robyn most likely has stopped kissing up to Meri. Robyn knows she is the favorite...

But waaaaaay too narcissistic and over the top drama/hate scripts. nothing but a rich bitch soap opera. they all come across as severely entitled and emotionally unhealthy people and i just couldn't stomach them at all. that's saying a lot too as i'm able to stomach watching the Browns - but mainly cause of this blog i can vent on! :)

Should we all sign a request for this show? Waddda ya all think?

Maybe she'll have a real light bulb moment one day and realize, "OMG! i've actually wronged a lot of people myself and i need to apologize and ask for their forgiveness!" yeah, right. when hell freezes over.

    7. She has also changed her 'tag line' to being an "independent woman' (dig at Robyn) and the picture is of just Meri. Whereas it used to have Kody on the twitter picture, too like Robyn's does.

ITA that Meri is sending this passively aggressively to her 'spouses' hoping they will see how superior she is. And that they have (of course) wronged them and she is 'gasp' out reading books on learning how to forgive their sorry butts.

Frankly, I can't think of anything more emotionally exhausting than being a sister wife to Meri Brown.

    8. ...it used to have Kody on the twitter picture

Looks like that leaves Robyn as the only sisterwife pictured with Kody. Meri is definitely sending out a signal...makes me wonder what she is going to do when Mariah leaves for college.

    9. So, how would the finances work out if Meri divorced Kody while they still jointly "owned" their house?

How does the alimony stack up when a house is involved that is mortgaged under both their names? Both the Lehi house and the mcmansion? Would Janelle get screwed with her portion of the equity in the Lehi house? Would Meri get any of the assets given how much debt there is? If Kody declares bankruptcy then will she get anything?

      Delete
    10. PawPrint - I think Nevada is a community property state and now that Mariah is 18 there would be no child support involved. My guess is that they'd have to have the homes appraised for current value and either sell and split the difference or one of them could buy out the other's interest. That's the debt as well as any equity that might have accumulated. The Lehi house is owned in conjunction with Janelle so it would probably be a three way split, which means that Janelle will more than likely be ass out on that deal since (I'm guessing) most of the $$ in that house was hers. Just guessing.

  7. The Arias trial....
So glad the DV witness is *finally* finished her direct testimony. It was endless and you have to wonder how any of those jurors can still sit there day after day and be focused.

Martinez has his work cut out for him to walk that fine line between being not labeled "an abuser" as he questions her in cross exam as he attempts to blow holes in her testimony where she stated that Travis Alexander was an abuser. She makes that declaration based solely *on Arias's account of events.* Amazing!!

And just think...after Martinez is done....Jennifer Wilmott (whom other blogs now have nicknamed Gidget) will be up *again* for any re-direct to try to undo whatever damage Martinez may accomplish on his cross exam. I find Wilmott's "little girl" voice to be hard to take non-stop.

Then the prosecution will be able to launch their rebuttal phase.
Will this trial EVER end !!??

    1. I'm watching the opening arguments on HLN today. I'd not seen them before. Juan ("Mr. Juanderful") Martinez is laying it all out. Once he gets to the "she filled extra cans with gas and turned off her cell phone so she couldn't be tracked by buying gas or via cell towers," I'm hoping he'll point out to them that this is NOT a victim - this is a cold-blooded, premeditated murderer.

    2. Having been in an abusive situation when I was growing up and listening to the latest witness, I am siding with Arias. Despite the fact that she drove back 1000 miles after being apart from Alexander---did not some of the polygamist women return to abuse after being 'out' of their abusive situations?

So very sorry that you had to live through that. It's very understandable that you would relate to "the story" that Jodi Arias is projecting.

Have you seen any of the DV survivors who have come forward in the media to say that her story does not fit the pattern which they unfortunately have had to live lived through?
Many DV counselors, DV shelter directors and survivors feel that Arias is using DV to avoid a 1st degree conviction. And they resent it in support of all the many, many legitimate abuse victims out there who either have lived it, are now living it, or who will live it.
It is vital that these victims' horrible reality never be trivialized or marginalized by someone falsely using it as an excuse for her obsession and murderous act.

Once Arias had run the gamut of all the denials that she did it and that she wasn't even there, and then changed her story and created the next mega detailed lie about two other people killing him and victimizing her....and was then confronted with the irrefutable evidence that she was indeed the killer and that she indeed did all of the subterfuge and cleanup to avoid detection, she then switched to this story of abuse and self-defense.
Her first team of lawyers quit, then she wanted to present her case herself sans a lawyer, and then these two lawyers were appointed.
There is no question that Jodi Arias is shrewd, intelligent and cunning.

What is funny is how she so carefully spoon-fed her questions to the DV witness, literally coaching her in the questions on what she wanted her to say and answer. But then when Juan stepped up, it was a major game-changer for that witness as to how to answer *his* questions. She kept looking over at Wilmott and Lurch as to what to do and say.

    6. Anonymous 2:21.

I, too, am sorry you went through domestic violence.

Those in the polygamist groups who returned to the lifestyle are primarily those who were born and raised in it. They were indoctrinated at an age where their brains were just beginning to form, and they didn't develop good thought and choice processes.

Jodi's relationship with Travis began when she was a fully grown adult. IMHO, she didn't go back to an abuser. She started stalking a man who was DONE with her. Did he still have sex with her? Yep. He was 28 and part of a religious group where premarital sex was (1) not approved of, and (2) not easily come by. But he, himself, called her a skank (so we know he was honest), and he tried to break up with her.

She stocked up gasoline cans in her car (so she couldn't be tracked with cameras or gas receipts at service stations), and she turned off her cell phone (so she couldn't be tracked by "pings" from cell towers). She remembers or has journaled EVERY detail of her entire life - except the hours after she murdered Travis in cold blood.

She's a psychopath who will have earned whatever sentence she is given at the end of this trial.

    7. And another thing. I have traveled to California across the AZ desert frequently (yep, I'm old enough to remember going to Cali BEFORE there was an I-10...hell, before there was even a FREEWAY!!)

Anyway, NOT ONCE did I carry extra gas in gas cans. I carried gallon jugs of water, but not gas. In a passenger car you can easily go from Metro Phoenix to Blythe CA on half a tank. I would fill up in either Blythe or even further down the road in Indio.

Arias took those gas cans because she didn't want anyone to know she was in AZ.

      Delete
    8. I don't know that much about her journals. You do say there are no entries after when she was "in the fog".
Are there any journal entries from the time she left CA to when she arrived there? Or was she in a fog then too. Like does she say...I stopped to put gas from the jugs in the car. Does she stop to eat? Does she just pretend that period of time never happened? Does that not say premeditation as she covers up what happened before she got there? Or do the journals jump to when she went to Utah? Did she write daily or weekly?

    9. If J.A. was abused as a child, wouldn't she carry that behavior with her into adult relationships? Her parents say she was strange or odd, but that's what my parents said. It's taken years for me to realize I wasn't the 'sick one' but a weathervane for the physical abuse visited on me by my father. The violence ended when I snapped and fought back. I have no doubt what I would have done if I had a weapon other than my hands and teeth. I've lived over 6 decades and the memories are still thawing. I have not followed this case from the beginning. I learned about it on this blog and have done some research and watched some of the trial, live.

  10. Maybe Meri is trying to get mysisterwifesclosetmycompanynameiswaytoolong customer's to forgive her for having to wait on iconic jewelry delivery and how much they charge for shipping.

Meri seems truly bitter. All of her posts are passive aggressive and aimed at someone in particular. MAYBE, her friendship with Robyn was one of those "keep friends close. keep enemies closer" kind of things. If you can't beat them, join them? Robyn being her BFF set her up to remain in the spotlight that shun on Robyn for like two years as new wife.

Seeing all of the years of resentment and such that was driven by Meri against the other wives, you would think Kody would step up and put Meri in per place. I'm not talking about being a dominating a-hole, but simply reminding her of her station within the marriage and how plygnation is supposed to run. Meri should feel a sense of sisterly love for these other women. It seems like her obligation in this way of life. Also, obligation is a strong word. It is expected, but it should come naturally without the strife and struggle.

I can't wrap my mind around why anyone would see this lifestyle as "right". Does Kody feel a sense of jealousy? Does he struggle daily with the idea that his wife is with another saying the same things he does to her? No. This man receives constant praise for his existence on Earth. A woman should not have to feel jealousy on a regular basis. It's not one of those emotions you can just toss under the bed and forget. They are constantly reminded that they are not the only one. They did enter into this lifestyle by their own accord, but they are deceiving themselves if they think that jealousy is normal in marriage.

Arias-- I don't watch this kind of stuff. My kiddo takes over the television non-stop. I watched my parents be glued to the television every day throughout the OJ Simpson trial. I decided then I would never obsess over a trial (as if obsessing over Sister Wives and Duck Dynasty is any better. lol). My mom just the other day was saying "I wish this trial was already over!". Yet, she watches it every day and yells at the screen. lol She doesn't want it over. I think she hopes for another two months to a year. Ha!

Some people may disagree with me. But after watching them for so long, following her tweets & reading their book I genuinely believe Meri hates polygamy. Based on almost all of the books I've read (suggested by SWB) it seems that most little girls who came from a seemingly "functional" polygamous family want to continue living that way. Until they either find themselves in an abusive situation or genuinely fall in love.

In Meri's case I think she honestly wanted it at first but ended up falling hard for Kody and changing her tune instead. In the book they describe her as being quiet, shy and lacking self confidence. In her mind she found Mr. Perfect in Kody. Although they both agreed to take on more wives, IMO it became clear pretty quick that she didn't want to share her husband. Either she truly believed she wouldn't get into heaven without living the "principle" or she thought she would lose Kodster forever if she didn't follow him in it. Whatever the reason, I think its plain as day that she didn't want to share her man! And I think its still the root of her problems today.

I found it funny that the first girl they were courting, who apparently Meri loved, still took off before the "sealing" ceremony and it was never really explained why. There could've been a million reasons, I know. But if Meri's attitude was anything like it is now the girl probably ran. We all know how she treated and still streets Janelle. And Kody admitted that she seethed around young Christine. As for her BFF Robyn? Yeah, I never bought that. What Christine showed toward Robyn was jealousy. I feel as if Meri is just flat out resentful that she couldn't have Kody to herself. If they did therapy episodes I think it would come out.

If what I speculate is right than I still don't feel bad for her. Never have. She should've moved on a while ago if she couldn't handle it. We've all experienced heartbreak. And I'd rather have my heart broke for a little while than live my entire life miserable.

      Delete
    2. If memory serves, in an interview Meri mentioned that she loved Kody so much she would accept sisterwives just to be with him. I'll try to find it (I'm hoping its in the book) but I remembered how that was so against everything they were preaching about how wonderful polygamy was, blah blah blah.

Even Christine knew that relationship Meri and Kody had with the teenager was not good...she felt the girl was too young (and she was...they courted her when she was under 18, and had to wait until the girl was 18 before announcing 'their' engagement). But I imagine Meri would have treated her as a servant - maybe that's why the girl got cold feet and ran. She saw the change in Meri's demeanor and realized just in time nope, not this one.

So I agree, Meri does hate polygamy. Meri had NOTHING to do with Janelle or even Christine joining the family. And if you read between the lines of their book, Meri may say she suggested Robyn to Kody, but I think she's just saying that to say face. Don't forget, Kody courting Robyn came at a LOW point of Meri's marriage to Kody.

      Delete
    3. As far as Meri setting up Robyn and Kody, how sad and low does a woman have to feel about herself and her marriage to do that? To think that maybe if she "gives" her husband another woman, it will keep him happy and earn her points with him? It almost reminds me of the wives of the men who abducted Jaycee Duggard and Elizabeth Smart. I think Meri does hate polygamy, but she wants so desperately for Kody to love her.

      Delete
    4. I think most women hate polygamy, but do it because they believe they must to please God or be "destroyed." I was surrounded by women who were suffering, but who would paste on smiles and say publicly that they "loved the principle"/were "so blessed for this opportunity"/ "so grateful" for their "sister wives"...etc. etc. That was what we were taught to do - it was how to show loyalty for our religion, and loyalty to very a warped idea of a"God" who actually wanted this of us.In reality it was torment. The leaders were always blathering on about "wives in harmony," and men who had that being able to become gods. We always knew our husbands couldn't get ahead if it looked like their "wives" were less than happy with each other or "plural marriage" It was/is a big sham.

I need to come out of my shell and say what I really think.)

I've read online that a conference she was supposed to speak at tomorrow has cancelled her presentation, due to the flood of phone calls they've received in protest of her appearance. Now those who protested are moving on to try to get her NEXT speaking engagement cancelled as well. And her book sales have tanked, and there are HUNDREDS of negative comments directed at her in the "review" section of her book on amazon.com.

    2. I knew she was in trouble when she told Martinez that she used the title because it was catchy.

I'm just hoping that Martinez points out that every conclusion this 'expert' has come to was based on the recollections of a confessed liar. I also wonder if she coached Arias on her confrontative style with Martinez - she simply could not just give a yes or no answer without ADDING something more to it.

Martinez: Did you eat eggs today?
Expert Witness: Yes, and I had ham and bisquits too.
Martinez: Did I ask you if you had anything else to eat? Did you not understand my question?

Thought I'd give my two cents about Kody! I live with a diagnosed Borderline Personality Disordered man, I'm in therapy learning how to communicate with him and to understand this disorder, and I've spend a good 200 hours on the very informative site of BPDFamily (you can actually see the time you've been logged in) in addition to reading other articles and websites. Sorry, that's sound like I'm tooting my own horn, but it's just to say I know a little bit about what I'm going to say: I think Kody shows many, many BPD traits. I know people here call him Narcissist, but I see him as too disorganised to be a true Narcissist. Normally a person with BPD is volatile, constantly looking for a new "high", self-absorbed, takes offence really quickly, can't see how other people feel and spins out of control at the drop of a hat ... A Narcissist is usually more controlled, more successful and more calm. Of course, he could have traits of both. Or he could just be an immature jerk....

Fascinating theory. BPD's can't form close relationships either, which works well in a multiple wife sitch. At the very least, this plyg family has a mega-case of S & M! That would explain a lot about the sister wives interactions by passive-aggressive Meri & Kodouche. If Meri's posts about forgiveness aren't meant as digs to her sister wives, then they're flat-out pathetic. I'd be embarrassed to post such things -- "Forgiveness is about your own healing, not the other persons actions, and will allow you to feel less anger." Newsflash: Isn't this obvious?? One of Meri's sisters and her brother have appeared on the show - her father is deceased. Robyn's sister and her step-father have made several appearances on the show. Janelle's mother (who is 'married' to Kody's father) has appeared. Kody's father, mother and several of his brothers have appeared. It's only Christine's family that has not appeared.

    2. OK everybody. Someone just tried to post an online article from foxnews about 2 infants contracting herpes after the circumcision ritual with one infant testing positive for HIV-1.

THIS IS AN ERROR...FOXNEWS IS WRONG....

Herpes simplex is known as HSV. It is categorized as either HSV-1 (cold sores) or HSV-2 (genital herpes).

The Foxnews article erroneously stated one baby tested positive for HIV-1. This is wrong, and when you click the companion article at Medicaldaily.com you will read that the original article said the baby tested positive for HSV-1 , not HIV-1.

      Big difference!

      Delete
    3. I think that giving an INFANT a lifeling, incurable, STD is Horrible. From the Medicaldaily.com article:

"The city last year began requiring parents to sign the consent form to perform the ritual, following a string of health incidents since 2000 that included 13 cases of herpes with two resulting in brain damage and two others in death. Neonatal herpes can cause death or serious disability among infants."

Yes, that said Brain Damage and Death from Herpes for these 4 poor little infants who were subjected to what would be considered Sexual Assault on an Infant in any other circumstance. How is it that the law does not step in? What of the other 10 infants who will have to live with this disease their entire little lives, knowing they will infect their wives who may then pass it along to their own little babies as they are being born.

Horrible enoght to sexually assault a newborn. Outrageous to give the little baby an STD in the process.

    1. I heard someone on HLN say that Martinez will rake LaViolette over the coals for all of this week, then there will be redirect and surrebuttal next week. Then (I love Arizona), the jury gets to ask questions. (Pretty sure question #1 will be "Ms. LaViolette, are you for real?"

Had you heard that this dippy defense witness was supposed to speak at a conference on domestic abuse this past weekend, but there were so many phone calls and e-mails to the sponsoring organization protesting her participation, they cancelled her!!!

The HLN commentator predicted it won't go to the jury before the end of the month. I'm going on a cruise early next month, and am PRAYING this is over before we leave!

    2. I don't have a lot of respect for LaViolette, but I saw something over at Amazon.com that is just rediculous. People who have not even purchased LaViolette's book, let alone have read it are giving 1 star reviews! Their are over 300 reviews of which most of them appeared between 4/1 and 4/5. The book takes 2-4 weeks to ship so you can't tell me these socalled reviewers have actually ordered and read the book within 3 days. All of these negative reviews are mentioning the Jodi Arias trial and LaViolette's expert testimony. And surprise, on Amazon these people are allowed to post a review without purchasing the book! I believe in Karma, but this is such idiocy. I read the Amazon guidelines and all of these socalled reviews should have been comments on the Amazon book forum, but no, a few zealots decide to go overboard in the hatred. It really is frightening to see, no doubt this is the same fury Jodi Arias had when she murdered Alexander.

      Delete
    3. I've read some of those comments, Anonymous 12:22.

I'm a pretty frequent user of Amazon, and didn't even know about the book forum. So those 300+ comments may have been made by others who don't either. They sure have a lot more visibility than they would on the book forum.

I don't fault those who posted the comments in the review sections. If Amazon wanted to delete them, they could. I'm actually surprised they didn't lock the page so no more comments could be made.

    4. I review on Amazon, and that happens on any book or movie that has a political, religious or social "hot button". There are sometimes reviews for books or movies that haven't been released on Amazon yet, and as long as they are within TOS guidelines they stay. Same with comments on reviews.

It's not the greatest policy, imo, but them's the Amazon rules. :)

  21. If you look on FB on The State vs Jodi Arias, they have close to 34,000 likes. They are very upset with AV as they say she is not unbiased and is slaughtering TA again with the words of Jodi Arias. They say JA had lots of time to doctor the journals before she was ever arrested and when she was representing herself. Then AV went to TA's sister and said "nothing personal" when she is not allowed to talk to them. Because of the way she talked to Jaun Martinez, they wonder if AV will be considered a hostile witness. She may well think the money is not worth her reputation getting slaughtered by those people. Never underestimate "the power of the people."

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. That's not a example of a hostile witness. If LaViolette was a prosecution witness saying those things then yes but she's a defense witness who is trying to support the defenses's claim that JA was a domestic violence victim.

    2. Definitely getting a Diane Downs "vibe" from this. She kept a journal as well and tried to use it to prove that she loved her kids and didn't shoot them. of course it was intentionally written that way. and she couldn't keep from obsessing about her lover, just like JA IMO.

    2. I've seen it mentioned here that Robyn receives SSI for Dayton, but as a mother with a son with Asperger's, I find it highly unlikely. There are kids on the autism spectrum that are unable to function without assistance and cannot qualify for SSI. Dayton is going to school, appears to be able to dress himself, feed himself, and function without assistance. There is very little chance that he qualifies for any benefits other than Medicaid, and that is doubtful now that they have the TLC money.

      Delete
    3. Christina@10:54pm- I do not know if Robyn receives any type of assistance for Dayton, however I am also a mother of an autistic child (who is now 22 years old). She was eligible for disability at the age of 18. Prior to 18 she was not eligible because my husband and I had good jobs with good insurance. I believe that it is based on income prior to 18 years of age. My daughter now gets disablity and Medicaid as well as our Health Insurance. ( Out insurance pays first and Medicaid picks up the difference). She lives in our home but the extra money helps with daycare for her. SSI is Supplemental Social Security and is different than disablity. It is paid to one who has paid into the Social Security system. (just tring to explain the difference so please do not think I am being mean!)

    1. I so agree with you. Alyce looks like a nice person, but she (along with the prior defense "expert") have been totally manipulated by the sociopathic defendant.

As much as I love Juan Martinez, I do wish he'd move on with it. The jury has people who are fairly intelligent. They already have picked up on the fact that this woman is basing her opinions on one-sided, untrue information provided by Jodi. They just want to get this over with and go home now.

      Delete
    2. Juan Martinez is beating her up pretty bad.....no pun intended. She seems to be running out of steam. I think pretty soon she will cave and then shout "Guillotine!"

      Delete
    3. I actually got irritated with him when he wouldn't move on from the "apology" questions. He was beating a dead horse and kept giving her the opportunity to reiterate that she was apologizing for reading her private journals without permission and that it was to build trust. Then he moved on to the "thinking she was as smart as Einstein" meaning she didn't have low self-esteem. It let her keep saying that one had nothing to do with the other.

During the self-esteem questions, I was thinking of an acquaintance from college who believed she was the most beautiful woman to walk the earth. But, she felt her only worth was her beauty, and had the lowest self-esteem of anyone I had ever met. She was actually quite smart and was often kind to everyone, and no where near as pretty as she thought. Unlike JA, who is average at everything and only kind when it suits her.

I was tired of Alyce not answering the questions that were asked, the defense counsel objecting to every other question and Juan spending 30 mins on each question. And yet, I couldn't turn it off. Kind of like Sister Wives.

    4. I think Martinez's plan at this point before he officially begins the state's rebuttal case (including calling their own expert witnesses) is to put everything he can on the jury's table about LaViolette's lack of objectivity toward Arias. I don't think he cares about how many objections and sidebars the defense throws out as long as the jury hears what he is presenting and adds that to their overall impressions.

As far as his demeanor....considering how cunning Arias is and how her defense is using every ploy in the book to sway the jury, he almost has to come off *angry* in defense of the slain victim to impress and remind jury of the severity of the allegations against Arias. If he didn't, would the jury be taken in by the all the smoke and mirrors?

It is almost comical to see yet another defense team try to tailor the physical image of the accused just like they did in the Casey Anthony trial. Casey was seated deliberately in a very low chair to make her look "small" and young..until she had to stand and then it was so obvious that she was not that small.
Same thing with Arias. Her chair (look at the backs of the chairs) is positioned noticeably lower than Willmott's chair as they sit shoulder to shoulder. Arias looks the same size as Willmott...when seated. Yet when they stand up together, Arias is much taller than Willmott. And Willmott even wears heels every day.
It's all about *creating* reality and truth.

    5. I was a trial paralegal for 15 years in civil court, not criminal. We were routinely in front of the same 5 judges for trials, and not one of them would have let this expert continue to not answer the questions. She would have been sanctioned by now. In fact, the constant objections by the defense would have been reviewed by now. If the objections were constantly overruled, the judge would admonish the defense attorney; if the objections were constantly sustained, she would admonish the plaintiff's counsel. It's very odd to me to see a sidebar every time an objection is made, but with such a long trial, so much at risk, and future appeals on the line, I understand why the judge has to let it go on.

Martinez should be, and probably is, concerned with all the objections. Objections can be used as a strategic move to break the flow in testimony, and break the concentration of the jurors. There have been studies done that showed a 15 second sidebar feels like a minute to the jurors, and when the trials go on this long, it gets harder to maintain focus.

I think LaViolette's refusal to answer some of the questions with a yes or no answer, when they can be, is hurting her credibility. She clearly believes he is taking some of her statements out of context and that she cannot answer a straight yes or no, but damn, arguing with all his questions is tiring.

Also, all attorneys try to tailor the image of their clients. There are studies published in legal magazines and jury consultants who detail exactly the best way to dress your client. I worked on a criminal case doing research and remember reading a request for the judge to allow the defendant access to certain blocked funds for the rental of several different suits. It was expected to be a long trial, he didn't own any suits, and showing up in prison orange was proven to cause a subconscious response of guilt in jurors. It was a long time ago so I don't remember the specifics, but the research and studies supported his request and the judge allowed it.
